ABOUT CRUX ART FOUNDATION

Introduction

Crux Art Foundation is an independent research initiative dedicated to the study of painting and its relation to human experience over time. The foundation focuses on how certain works of art continue to be encountered beyond their historical moment, and why viewing can remain active in memory long after an exhibition has ended. Through observation, documentation, and public engagement, Crux Art Foundation approaches artistic practice as a field of inquiry rather than solely as cultural production.

Core Statement

Painting sustains human presence through time.

  • Crux Art Foundation was established in response to a persistent gap within contemporary art discourse. While art history has examined style, context, and historical development, and the art world has often focused on reception and value, less attention has been given to a more fundamental question: why certain works of painting remain present to viewers long after their moment of creation. In an environment where artworks frequently circulate as images, information, or events, the experience of sustained viewing — the possibility that a work continues to be encountered — has gradually receded from discussion.

  • Crux Art Foundation investigates the conditions under which painting sustains human presence through time. The foundation approaches painting not only as an image or representation, but as a site of encounter between a work and a viewer. In this encounter, the viewer does not simply interpret meaning, but perceives the continued presence of another human life articulated through the work. For this reason, artistic endurance is not understood as reputation or historical status, but as the capacity of a work to remain encounterable across different moments of a viewer’s life.

  • To study this condition, the foundation works through long-term observation of artistic practice, exhibition environments designed for sustained viewing, artist oral histories, and the formation of publicly accessible archives. Exhibitions are treated as research situations in which the relation between viewer and work can unfold over time. Publications, documentation, and public conversations extend this experience beyond a single exhibition and allow it to be shared across locations and generations.

  • Through these activities, Crux Art Foundation seeks to develop an open field of knowledge concerning artistic endurance and the role of painting within human experience. The foundation does not aim to define value in advance, but to understand how a work may continue to matter, and why certain encounters with painting remain active in memory long after viewing.

Through these activities, we hope to offer more opportunities for artists around the world to showcase their creative power, while allowing art to continuously sow seeds of hope and emotion on a global scale.

I just want to be someone who is helpful to the world.

——Founder of the Foundation, Metra Lin

I have always been fond of art, but it was in 2006 when I was profoundly moved by art, leading me to develop a life vision of serving art and artists. One of the most influential artists for me is Cen Long. Both his character and his art have become my spiritual guide, subtly inspiring my reflections on life and the values I aspire to create.

I am an ordinary person, from an ordinary family, but I have always set the expectation for myself to 'be someone who is helpful to the world.' I don’t know exactly how to become such a person, but over the past decade, through the process of establishing Han Art Brokerage to promote the works of Master Cen Long, I have done my best to assist the artists I have been fortunate enough to encounter. I have worked hard to introduce art through words and language, diligently promoting artworks that embody the 'original spirit of truth, goodness, and beauty,' because I believe that in a chaotic world, this is the most vital light of humanity.

In 2009, I established Han Art Brokerage Co., Ltd., and in 2021, I founded Southern Cross Bookhouse. I have been steadily pursuing the things I want to do, step by step. Although I am involved in commercial activities, I have never forgotten my original intention: to become someone who is helpful to the world. But with only two hands and two feet, I can only do what is within my ability and help those I am capable of helping.

The Southern Cross Art Foundation, a vision I have long aspired to but have been unable to achieve until now, will finally come to fruition in 2024-2025, with its base in New York. I hope to leverage the foundation’s influence to promote art events that help uplift and purify the human spirit. This includes the long-term international plan to host Master Cen Long's solo exhibition, 'SEMINARE SPERANZA' and we also plan to support more artists from around the world whom I endorse.

The Southern Cross Art Foundation will gather more positive forces from around the world, becoming a small star that contributes to both art and the world. Although I don’t know the full extent of what I can achieve, I intend to keep trying and doing my best, for as long as I can, into eternity.
